Positive Feedback from the HMI Inspection of Shireland CLC       DfES Case Study with Year 8 Students from Shireland Language College

We were delighted to gain very positive feedback from HMI Grenyer following the EIC inspection of the Shireland CLC in March. HMI Grenyer endorsed the work of the CLC, describing it as a:

"well-managed programme crisply delivered, with very clear and well designed objectives, which provide a sound basis for effective evaluation."

He also provided some helpful suggestions for moving forward. We would like to thank evryone who has supported us in developing the provision at Shireland CLC and also in particular to thank partner school staff and students who spoke to HMI Grenyer and demonstrated their work, ensuring the success of the inspection.

The DfES recently filmed a Case Study at the CLC, looking at how ICT can support the teaching of an MFL to EAL students, working in collaboration with a Year 8 German Group and their teacher from Shireland Language College. The Case Study looked at how Digital Video and the use of ipods can develop speaking and listening skills and encourage collaboration. As a result of the Case Study the programme is to be embedded in the Year 8 MFL curriculum at Shireland Laguage College.

"The use of various types of ICT impacted on students' learning by making language learning memorable. It was a great way of developing creativity and fun."

St Michael's Spotlight on Data Logging Crocketts Lane go Digital

Year 13 students completed a four day module at the CLC which involved the building and cofiguration of a mini network.

" The students thoroughly enjoyed the four day intense practical activities that were involved in the module. Using the CLC as a venue to carry out the activities was an excellent decision as the CLC technicians were there to help us every step of the way. It also allowed the students to work in a less formal, industry like atmosphere."

Building on a previous visit to the City Learning Centre, St Michael's Year 8 students completed a number of investigations making use of the data logging equipment.

A number of schools have now started to borrow the data logging equipment, which is available on loan to schools to support specific projects with targeted groups.
